American Samoa – a group of islands in the southern Pacific Ocean, an unincorporated, unorganized territory of the United States (a U.S. territory that is not part of any state and does not have a formal federal charter of self-government).
Since April 17, 1900 (signing of Deeds of Cession). After the enactment of the Organic Act of 1929, American Samoa has had a limited form of internal self-government: it has an executive branch (governor appointed by Washington) and the Manu‘a legislative council, while the U.S. federal government remains responsible for foreign affairs, defense, and immigration.
