Aland Islands – an archipelago in the Baltic Sea and an autonomous region of Finland. Formally part of the Republic of Finland, it holds a special demilitarized status.
Since 1920 (the Autonomy Act passed by the Finnish Parliament) and especially following the League of Nations decision on June 9, 1921, the Aland Islands have enjoyed a broad system of self-government: they have their own unicameral parliament (Lagting) and a government headed by a lantrad, while Helsinki remains responsible for foreign affairs, defense, and justice. In 1951, the Autonomy Act was revised and expanded.
