Gibraltar — a rocky peninsula on the southern coast of Spain at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, a British Overseas Territory (a territory of the United Kingdom located outside the UK and governed under UK law), currency — Gibraltar pound (GIP).
Its modern status was established by Article 1 of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, its coat of arms and motto “Nulli Expugnabilis Hostia” reflect the Rock’s impregnability, legislative power is vested in an elected House of Assembly, executive power is held by a Council of Ministers led by a Chief Minister, the Governor is appointed by the Crown, and foreign affairs and defense remain the responsibility of the UK government.
