British Indian Ocean Territory – a group of islands in the central Indian Ocean, a British Overseas Territory (a territory of the United Kingdom located outside the UK and governed under UK law).

Since November 8, 1965 (detached from the Seychelles and Mauritius), administration is headed by a Commissioner appointed by the UK government, there is no permanent population, the territory is primarily used for military and scientific purposes, and the UK government remains responsible for foreign affairs and defense.
