United States Virgin Islands – a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea, an unincorporated, unorganized territory of the United States (a U.S. territory that is not part of any state and does not have a formal federal charter of self-government).
Since January 17, 1917 (purchased from Denmark, transfer completed March 25, 1917). After the enactment of the United States’ Organic Act of 1954, the United States Virgin Islands have had a limited form of internal self-government: they elect a governor, lieutenant governor, and a unicameral legislature, while the U.S. federal government remains responsible for defense, foreign affairs, and immigration.
